sex education (confusion for child)A California bill to ensure parents are fully informed about what their kids are being taught in public schools' sex education classes is slowly making its way through the state legislature.

SB 217, a bill designed to put sex education curricula online to give parents access to it, has languished in the legislature for more than a year. Greg Burt of the California Family Council says parents currently have to physically go to the school during the day to see the materials.

"You have to actually go down to the school district during certain times and in certain locations, and parents for whatever reason don't take the time," Burt relays. "It's too hard, you're a single parent, you've got two people working, and finding time to go down there and sit in the cubicle somewhere is not very convenient."

Burt says the bill was passed out of the Senate Education Committee after an opt-in requirement was removed.

"This is just the beginning of the process, but at least it legitimizes the issue," he tells One News Now. "It also kind of reveals there are certain people who don't want parents to see the curriculum."

Burt says the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, Equality California, and other LGBT activist groups are among those.
