An education policy analyst disagrees with a U.S. House Democrat's call to cancel student debt on day one if Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn into office.
According to Breitbart News, Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts thinks canceling school loans will ensure an equitable economic recovery from the hardships brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Mary Clare Amselem of The Heritage Foundation disagrees.
"In fact, it would be incredibly inequitable to ask American taxpayers, the vast majority of whom did not go to college, to subsidize the education of those who did," Amselem contends.
She believes the focus should be on solving the long-term problems within the broken federal student loan program.
"We should be tackling the federal student loan program, looking at why Washington is giving out these loans and then graduating students lacking marketable skills," the education policy analyst suggests. "That should be the problem that we should be addressing."
Amselem adds that blanket forgiveness of student loan debts will not even begin to solve the student loan crisis.
