China's Xi in front of CCP meetUniversities and colleges across the nation have been warned for months about China’s communist spies using their campuses and now two federal agencies are sending an official warning about China’s clandestine reach.

In a joint letter, the U.S. Dept. of Education and the State Dept. have pointed out the danger posed by a Confucius Institute on a college campus and the Confucius Classroom influencing a high school campus.

“Over the last decade,” reads the Oct. 9 letter, “the authoritarian government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has sent curriculum and PRC-trained teachers into hundreds of U.S. K-12 schools through a program called Confucius Classrooms.”

Yet the Classrooms are really part of the PRC’s “global influence campaign,” the letter further alleged. That claim comes after a State Dept agency learned a Chinese teacher who comes to the U.S. must be approved by the PRC and its Ministry of Education.

One clue that the U.S. views the education classes as Chinese operations dates back to August, when the State Dept. designated the Washington, D.C.-based Confucius Institute U.S. Centre as a foreign mission of the PRC.

Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars, says approximately a third of U.S. colleges and universities have booted the Institutions from campus.

“But there are still more than 70 still operating,” he advises.

The official letter serves as a fair warning, he says, that U.S. campuses are treading on dangerous ground when they cooperate with the Institutes.

China is famous for its widespread clandestine efforts in foreign lands, including in U.S. corporations and hi-tech firms, and Woods points out that approximately 50 U.S. academics have been handcuffed and arrested in just the last year for alleged ties to Communist China.
