standardized testsPresident Trump is waiving federally required standardized testing for public schools because of the coronavirus pandemic, and some homeschooling parents are unclear about how that affects them.

Mike Donnelly of the Home School Legal Defense Association explains that because homeschooling is regulated at the state level, President Trump has no constitutional authority to impose or waive federal requirements.

"What he was talking about was the testing that's required by the federal government for states to receive money under the Every Student Succeeds Act," Donnelly tells OneNewsNow. "So his waiver of testing does not affect homeschool students."

He adds, though, that homeschooling families still need to comply with state law, "unless it's been appropriately deferred by the legitimate state authority in their state -- either by governor's declaration, or by an act of the legislature, or the regulatory authority, depending on who in the state has that authority."

HSLDA is tracking state legislatures to detect any action that may affect homeschooling during the coronavirus pandemic.
