NY lawmakers brazenly choose illegals over kids of vets

high school graduationAn immigration reform activist calls it unconscionable that Democrats in the New York legislature blocked a bill expanding college tuition for Gold Star families after approving $27 million in tuition aid to illegal aliens.

The children of veterans can currently utilize only $2.7 million, which is split among 145 students right now, and the proposed bill would have expanded the college aid to many more children who are the dependents of deceased or disabled veterans.

But the legislation failed. The state assembly's Higher Education Committee voted 15-11 to shelve the bill but the same committee approved the New York State Dream Act, which allows illegal immigrants to qualify for state aid for higher education.

ICE protestMatt O'Brien, director of research at the Federation for American Immigration Reform, calls it “unconscionable” for the committee to put illegal aliens ahead of the children of U.S. military veterans.

“There is no way that we should be taking care of the interests of immigration law violators,” he complains, “before we take care of the interests of people who actually served the United States."

O'Brien suspects the motive is purely political: the Democratic Party knows the “surest source” of future Democratic voters is immigrants, he says.

“That's a very dangerous situation to be in as a political party,” he tells OneNewsNow, “because you are accountable at the polls to U.S. citizens who are able to vote. So I think this may come back to haunt the Democrats."
