Graduation2 620x300A Washington, DC-based pro-school choice organization is seeing signs of a new era of educational freedom in America.

As examples of the growing popularity of school choice, Tommy Schultz of the American Federation for Children (AFC) says recent polls from Florida show 56 percent of students whose parents take advantage of that option will likely earn a college degree. AFC's national communications director offers as another example that 78 percent of Tennesseans support education savings accounts (ESAs).

"These kids are coming from the lowest-income quartile," he notes, referring to the Florida statistics. "Sixty-eight percent of these kids are African-American or Hispanic. So in comparison to their public school peers, they're graduating from college at a higher rate."

Those who listened to President Donald Trump's recent State of the Union address were reminded of the growing public popularity and success of school choice. Without going into detail, Trump called on Congress to enact new school-choice legislation. Schultz states what his organization would like Congress to do.

"We hope that Congress acts quickly to let more states have more options, frankly," he tells OneNewsNow. "We want the states to take the lead on this [because] we think that they are in the best position to providing these options – and Congress can do a lot to help that."

However, Education Week points out that the school choice pitch is likely to be a "tough sell" in a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.
