Israeli flagA Berkeley student group that supports Israel is calling for the firing of a professor for posting anti-Semitic statements on social media.

According to the Berkeley student group Tikvah, Professor Hatem Bazian shared a tweet featuring grotesque anti-Semitic language and imagery.

Adah Forer, co-president of Tikvah, says Bazian has apologized for the posting but also says Bazian’s apology is not sufficient.

"In his apology, Bazian said he is not anti-Semitic, but these re-tweets show otherwise,” states Forer. “It's pretty much given that it's hate speech because that's what anti-Semitism is, and hate speech is not protected. So, in my opinion, this should not be excused."

Bazian is the co-founder of Students for Justice in Palestine and serves as chairman of American Muslims for Palestine.

Forer says Tikvah is calling on Berkeley officials to terminate Professor Bazian because he has a long history of anti-Semitic actions.

"We hope the university will fire him for these actions, because it's not the first time that he has shown his anti-Semitism,” declared Forer. “There have been multiple recordings in the past of him saying things that are anti-Semitic."
