box of crayonsA growing number of colleges and universities are utilizing coloring books to combat the stress of college life. Cultural analyst Janice Crouse evaluates whether this is a good idea.

The latest school to introduce coloring sheets to counter student anxiety and depression is American University in Washington, DC. According to the school's Facebook page, adult coloring books "can help with a number of emotional and mental health issues" - including obsessive-compulsive, eating, anger management, and substance abuse.

Author and commentator Janice Crouse says at first the use of coloring sheets seems laughable - but that a closer look uncovers a serious problem.

"As I thought about it more, I was rather disturbed because I think it shows a great failure in our culture to instill any kind of religious values and any kind of strong, central commitment for young people," she tells OneNewsNow.

Crouse believes churches are doing an inadequate job of pointing students to what they and everyone else needs to cope with life.

"Our churches are not filling that 'God-hole,' that vacuum where people need to have an inner strength, the confidence that they know whose they are," she says.

The College Fix reports that in addition to coloring books, other universities are offering napping rooms, opportunities to frolic with puppies, yoga and chair massages as de-stressers.
