Julaine Appling of the Wisconsin Family Council says the Milwaukee school board has been reluctant to okay the establishment of new charter schools. But with steadily declining public school enrollments, they have decided to open a charter school.

“I think the Milwaukee public school board said, Look, we’ve got to be willing to at least establish a charter school under our auspices in order to get that funding stream that comes with those students when they reenter a charter school sanctioned by the Milwaukee public schools,” she tells OneNewsNow.

Appling regrets the opening of the new Milwaukee Excellence Charter School is more about money than it is about student welfare.

“I think it’s unfortunate that this charter school is being set up to go after students who have been in the voucher program and done well in that program, to try and lure them back into the system so that the Milwaukee public schools can have more money,” she says.

The new charter school is slated to open at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.
