A leading pro-life group has compiled a list of the top schools it feels offer excellent resources for unmarried, pregnant students to help them avoid resorting to abortions in order to finish school.

pregnant and in schoolThe list of "Top Schools for Pregnant & Parenting Students" is led by The College of St. Mary (Omaha, NE), a Catholic, all-women's university that hosts a nationally recognized "Mothers Living & Learning" program for single moms. Also among the list of 11 schools are Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, NC), St. Catherine University (St. Paul, MN), University of Notre Dame (South Bend, IN), Texas A&M University (College Station, TX), and Brigham Young University (Provo, UT).

According to Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, college-age women report the highest number of abortions. She says by creating this list, her group hopes to inspire other schools to offer additional resources for students facing unexpected pregnancies.

Hawkins, Kristan (Students for Life)"I think it's a very important list for us to have when we're discussing how we as a pro-life movement can create a culture of life," she tells OneNewsNow. "You know, how can we truly help these women who are facing unplanned pregnancies and make sure [a woman] never has to feel like she has to choose between her education, her goals and the life of her child."

Hawkins says Christian schools often feel conflicted when it comes to dealing with pregnancies out of wedlock.

"I think there's, a lot of times, a struggle there, particularly amongst Christian universities," she acknowledges. "[They struggle with] how to be there supporting women who face unplanned pregnancies, but also how to make sure that you're not condoning the actions that led to that unplanned pregnancy. [But] I think that there's a balance that they can find."

Nine of the 11 schools on the list are either affiliated with a faith group or have a history of religious affiliation.

In addition, Students for Life provides an online resource – PregnantOnCampus.org – that offers a state-by-state directory of pregnancy and parenting resources for students.
