Ashley Smith of Truckers Against Trafficking says women and girls flowing into prostitution are often placed in locations frequented by truckers on the nation's highways.

"Traffickers as a whole, they are looking for areas where they believe there will be men that are away from their families, maybe they have free time on their hands, or they have extra money," Smith explains. "So that could be at truck stops; that could be at hotels and motels."

Sports events or anything that draws large crowds are also seen as prime locations.

So Truckers are being recruited to help by getting trained to spot trafficking victims and reporting instances to a trafficking hot line.

"Truckers can see how they might see this crime and how powerful they are in being reporters of the crime," says Smith. "We also have accompanying wallet cards that really outline the crime -- what to look for, who to call -- and then window decals that we can mail to anybody free of charge."

Human and labor trafficking has been identified and reported in small towns and large cities in all 50 states. 1,014,367 drivers have completed the training, and 2,692 have made calls to the national hotline, resulting in 1,296 victims being identified so far.
