U.S. Capitol 3A Washington D.C.-area pastor says he applied for a permit to conduct an annual prayer service at the U.S. Capitol but was denied permission for the first time ever.

Rev. Pat Mahoney, who leads the Christian Defense Coalition, requested the permit from Capitol Hill Police in observance of the National Day of Prayer, which is May 6.

“Our permit was denied,” he tells One News Now.

The looming issue is not the permit denial itself, he says, but the “grave danger” it demonstrates when a public expression of faith is denied.

Mahoney, Rev. PatrickIf the permit is not allowed, he adds, it will be the first time in 70 years the public will not gather at the Capitol for an annual event that is recognized by the federal government and by the U.S. president.

“This day is designated by Congress,” he concludes, "but you are not allowed to have a public prayer gathering.”

Mahoney filed suit against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Kamala Harris after he was denied a permit for a Good Friday ceremony.
