Academy of Country Music AwardsThe Academy of Country Music held its annual awards ceremony on Sunday night – and a church service broke out.

The U.S. is bitterly divided … riots in the streets, politicians at each other's throats, First and Second Amendment rights under threat, and voting protections in the balance. So, it was like a breath of fresh air when country music recording star Carrie Underwood took the stage at the Academy of Country Music Awards and began singing "Amazing Grace."

It was the start of more than seven minutes of hymns off Underwood's new album, one of which was performed with gospel great CeCe Winans. The medley consisted of the hymns "Amazing Grace," "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," "The Old Rugged Cross" – and closed with "How Great Thou Art." (See video below)

Christian apologist and author Dr. Alex McFarland says the hymns were theologically deep and scripturally true – and hit the mark.

McFarland

"This is not just a nod to 'gospel' – a lot of people do Amazing Grace," he tells One News Now. "It was very impassioned and seemed very genuine and authentic.

"I think this is something that is going to be watched millions of times and talked about for years."

McFarland points out that Underwood has been taken to task by Christian ministries for statements that are weak on biblical sexuality – and rightly so. But the music, he adds, was a balm to the soul of the country.

"This is no time for some undefined, amorphous spirituality. Our nation needs Christ," he emphasizes.
