Jerry Cox of the Family Council tells One News Now two concerning measures have been introduced in the Arkansas Legislature.

"There's a provision in one of those bills that would allow a nursing home or hospital that wants to take a person off of life support to be able to go to a judge and get an order from the judge that would allow them to remove the person from life support," Cox reports.

In such a case, if the court does not act within three days, then the facility can proceed to terminate the patient's life.

The proposals also alter the definition of terminal illness.

"Under that definition, a lot more people are going to be determined terminally ill by the nursing homes," Cox explains. "And once that happens, it changes how the person's healthcare is handled."

In addition, irrespective of a patient's wishes or that of their families, the facilities could decide on their own to withhold food and water from patients, essentially starving them to death.

"I'm very troubled by this," Cox admits. "I don't want us to do anything that disrespects people at the end of life, and I fear that these bills do that."
