surgical instruments 2As the states deal with what one conservative calls a national problem, Alabama lawmakers are considering a measure that will protect children from life-altering medical treatments that could harm them.

Becky Gerritson of the Alabama Eagle Forum tells One News Now the issue, minors thinking they were born in the wrong body, is a national problem.

"In some states we have girls as young as 13 getting double mastectomies. We have boys as young as 17 getting full sex reassignment surgeries, full genital sex reassignment surgeries," Gerritson relays. "In Alabama we have eight-year-olds, that's third graders, going on puberty blockers."

So, life-altering medical treatments are being used on children for something that will never be accomplished, because the problem is not physical; it is mental.

"Gender dysphoria is an identity disorder similar to anorexia,"Gerritson compares. "These children believe they were born in the wrong body. It's a feeling that they have; it's an unhappiness that they have. And giving them puberty blockers or cross hormones or surgery will not fix that underlying problem."

Besides that, most children who struggle with gender dysphoria naturally outgrow it at some point in their teenage years. So Alabama is considering the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act (SB 10), which would prohibit puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and sex reassignment surgeries from being administered to physically healthy minors in Alabama. It does not, however, block use of the drugs or hormones for legitimate medical problems.

The measure has passed the Alabama Senate and is ready to be debated in the lower chamber.
