Hippocratic OathLawmakers in the Netherlands are wrestling with a dangerous bill to expand euthanasia.

Euthanasia for the terminally ill was legalized in the Netherlands 19 years ago, and Alistair Thompson of Care Not Killing, a UK-based alliance of individuals and organizations that brings together disability and human rights groups, healthcare providers, and faith-based bodies, tells OneNewsNow a new proposal makes the already liberal law even more liberal.

Thompson says the bill, which would allow the elderly to elect to be euthanized if they feel their life is complete, has a 50/50 chance of being approved.

"Given the Netherlands has an incredibly liberal system already, we are worried that once it's introduced, even [the] scant safeguards that have been included in the draft legislation will slowly be whittled away," the alliance spokesman comments.

He says the danger is that a lot of people may want to resort to suicide when they reach a point where they feel their life is complete. That is why family and friends need to make sure they are a part of their loved ones' lives.

"My organization … and many others advocate for better palliative care, for better care of vulnerable people in our society, regardless of whether they have a disability or chronic condition or are terminally ill," Thompson adds.

The Dutch proposal for euthanasia would allow a person who is 75 or older and feels they have a completed life to choose to be killed, even if they have no illness or disability. Euthanasia experts have told OneNewsNow the Netherlands started down a slippery slope when it legalized this practice, and now the country is jumping off a cliff.
