Media fawns over Cuomo, yawns over dead New Yorkers

Gov. Cuomo praised by mediaThe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is being felt by millions, but a terrible policy has caused tens of thousands of preventable deaths and its most visible perpetrator has escaped responsibility.

One tragedy from Covid-19 is the horrible impact on the elderly, who are most vulnerable, and especially those in long-term care facilities where the virus can easily spread among staff and residents.

Andy Mangione of AMAC Action tells OneNewsNow the federal government issued guidelines, which should have served as a warning to the state’s governors, but they were not.

“The guidelines were issued but they issued their own guidance,” he says of some governors. “They issued their own executive orders and forced nursing homes to admit people with the virus.”

In the state of New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo sent coronavirus- infected patients from hospitals into nursing homes who then infected the elderly residents, and the bodies began stacking up.

elderly patientCuomo, in fact, was enjoying media adoration for his daily press conferences, including speculation of a White House run, at the same time thousands of elderly New Yorkers were stricken with the virus and dying from its lung-choking invasion.

According to a non-adoring New York Post op-ed, New York’s troubles began with a Dept. of Health order from March 25 that required nursing homes and rehab centers to admit COVID-19 patients who were being discharged from hospitals.

“It stands as one of the worst decisions in New York history,” writes columnist Michael Goodwin, “because it condemned the most vulnerable to hellish deaths surrounded by strangers while no friends or relatives were allowed to visit.”

Cuomo’s ill-fated decision did not go unnoticed by Janice Dean, the Fox News meteorologist, who lost her mother-in-law and her father-in-law to COVID-19. Known for her upbeat personality despite dealing with multiple sclerosis, Dean has used her high profile to criticize Gov. Cuomo and to blast the media for failing to press him on the issue, especially after media outlets were praising him as handsome, proven leader.

NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo COVIDAs recently as this weekend, media watchdog Newsbusters was reporting on a softball interview with Cuomo by Jane Pauley and CBS News. Pauley giggled over Cuomo being a single man and never pressed him over the nursing home policy.

According to the Post op-ed, New York authorities have said the virus claimed 6,200 lives in nursing homes, which is about 25 percent of the state’s 25,000 fatalities.

Goodwin writes that the number is “certainly higher” than the official tally, and Dean has pointed out that her mother-in-law was not counted as a nursing home fatality because she contracted the virus at a nursing home but passed away in a hospital bed.

Jim Martin of the 60 Plus Foundation tells OneNewsNow that other countries took better care of their vulnerable elderly citizens during the pandemic than some U.S. communities.

"That saved an awful lot of lives," he says, "in the long run."

One problem that is being addressed, he adds, is that nursing homes are not properly funded.

"And by that I mean they're understaffed. The workers are underpaid," Martin says. "They're under-valued. That's why they're under-paid. They need to have better training."

Mangione tells OneNewsNow that AMAC is pleased investigations have been launched.

“We definitely want to examine how we reacted to this,” he says. “We definitely want to examine our supply chain, our relationships with certain foreign entities, i.e. China, and our dependence on them for not only pharmaceuticals but for personal protective equipment. All of that has to be evaluated.”
