coronavirus rubber gloveA conservative activist says it's ridiculous that Democratic lawmakers are calling for racial data in virus testing in the middle of a worldwide pandemic.

In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) and Representative Ayanna Pressley (D), both from Massachusetts, point out that comprehensive demographic data on people who are tested or treated for the virus that causes COVID-19 does not exist.

The letter, which was also signed by Democratic Senators Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey and Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois, urges the HHS secretary to work with municipalities, states, and private labs to ensure that racial and ethnic data are being collected.

"Why don't we just look at they're hitting highly populated communities period," asks Marie Fischer of the Project 21 Black Leadership Network. "Let's not break it down by race, because by the time you spend the time breaking things down by race, then you've wasted time. You can do the data later. People are already upset. People are scared. People are nervous. They just want to take this test and move on."

And she wonders where all the Democratic politicians were when thousands of people were dying from the H1N1 pandemic on Barack Obama's watch.

"I remember H1N1. I barely remember anybody talking about it," Fischer recalls. "I didn't hear about anybody shutting anything down."

She was "shocked" to learn there were more than 12,000 H1N1 deaths in America. "I didn't realize it was that bad because it was never brought to anybody's attention," she says.
