medical marijuana dispensary (pot)The Democratic governor of Illinois is talking up the legalization of recreational marijuana, but a state-based group says this will backfire.

The bill signed Tuesday by the Governor J.B. Pritzker allows the licensed growth, sales, possession, and consumption of cannabis for adults 21 and over. Illinois previously decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana. "I'm so proud that our state is leading with equity and justice in its approach to cannabis legalization and its regulatory framework," said Pritzker.

David E. Smith of the Illinois Family Institute argues that families are going to learn the hard way that this is foolish policy.

"We held our own town hall meetings throughout the whole state [and] we had special meetings and invited all the state lawmakers," Smith tells OneNewsNow. "We brought in experts from Colorado to talk to our state lawmakers, to warn them of the negative consequences – and not enough of them heeded the warnings."

Colorado is one of several states that now allows recreational marijuana.

In one of those town hall meetings, an emergency room doctor from Colorado told Illinois legislators that when she started in Pueblo, ER wait times were 45 minutes. After legalization, they're now nine hours plus.

Smith, David (IFI)"Another thing that concerns me is we're going to have more buzzed drivers on our roadways, more buzzed workers on our job sites, more buzzed students in our classrooms," Smith continues.

"Scripture tells us to be sober and be alert," he continues. "Why? Because the devil is roaming around looking for someone to devour – and with this product, you're not going to be sober, you're not going to be alert. Which means you're going to be vulnerable to the attacks of the devil – and I just think there's going be a lot of people caught up in addiction and vice …."

The bill is HB 1438.
