Hippocratic OathA prominent group of physicians has fought off yet another push to urge them to help kill their patients.

The annual American Medical Association meeting has again rejected proponents of doctor-assisted suicide who want the organization to drop its ethical stand against it and move to a neutral stance.

Kristen Hanson of the Patient's Rights Action Fund tells OneNewsNow the vote wasn't even close: 71 percent voted to “reaffirm” their opposition to the ongoing push, she says.

That confirms that doctors view their role as a healer and want no part in assisted suicide, she adds.

CNS News reported the vote was 360-190 when the AMA met June 10 in Chicago.

A vote to update the Code of Ethics with the statement that helping patients die is “fundamentally incompatible” with the physician’s role as a healer passed 392-162, the story also reported.

Proponents are not backing down, however, and are expected to keep pushing at future eetings.

Hanson calls it dangerous public policy that opens the door for mistakes, coercion and abuse.

“It really does erode the doctor-patient relationship, the trust between a doctor and a patient,” she says.

According to the CNS News story, AMA members also voted to continue referring to the practice as “physician-assisted suicide” rather less more innocuous terms such as “aid in dying” preferred by the proponents, who want “value-neutral terminology.”
