YAF free speech signAngry students at Baylor University attempted – unsuccessfully – to ban a conservative Christian commentator and author from speaking about family values on the campus.

Conservative blogger Matt Walsh spoke last week at the Waco, Texas, school about how the left is trying to change traditional Christian values. "Why the Left Has Set Out to Redefine Life, Gender, and Marriage" was the title of his talk. But Patrick Hill II, a homosexual Baylor graduate, started a petition to shut down Walsh, according to the Baylor Lariat.

Derryck Green with the Project 21 Black Leadership Network says via his petition, Hill was attempting to impose his preferences on the entire Baylor community.

"Baylor University has a history of being at least identified with Christianity as well," notes Green. "So not only is he challenging the beliefs of a person coming to speak on college campus, he's challenging the beliefs of the college campus."

Despite the 2,200 signatures on the petition to ban Walsh, Green says Baylor president Linda Livingstone did the right thing by letting the event go forward.

Green

"The administrator, professors and [staff] are the leaders; they are supposed to be the leaders of the institution," he argues. "They're not supposed to let students who don't know anything – because of limited life experiences – dictate to them what should happen at these colleges."

More recently, some students and alumni at Taylor University – an evangelical university in Indiana – are up in arms that Vice President Mike Pence will speak at this year's commencement in May.
