University of Minnesota entrance signA university has backed away from a controversial policy that would have punished faculty and students for refusing to use a person’s preferred pronouns.

The University of Minnesota has announced it will not discipline faculty and students with firing or expulsion for refusing to use preferred gender pronouns, The College Fix reported in a late February story.

But it’s not really over, says Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute, who suspects that it’s “expected” on campus nonetheless.

"I mean, what would you do in your job if your boss said to you, You are expected to do something,” she points out. “Do you think that's like you have a choice?”

"Celebrate Diversity" bannerThis is not the end of the story, she predicts, because progressives are relentless in getting what they want.

"This is what the left does: approach things incrementally,” she warns, “push things as far as they can until they're stopped. Wait a little bit, then reintroduce it when the culture has been further indoctrinated."

The College Fix quoted the director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action who said students commented that the policy should "educate and inspire" people to engage in "respectful behavior."

The university issued a statement saying nothing in the policy is designed to interfere with principles of academic freedom or free speech.
