MAGA hat (Trump)Students at an Arizona high school say they were bullied by school officials because they wore "Make America Great Again" clothing and hats as part of the school's "USA Day."

It was "Spirit Week" at Perry High School in Gilbert, and a group of students told AZfamily.com that school officials asked them to leave campus because they were wearing MAGA clothing and displayed a pro-Trump flag as they were taking pictures at the end of the day.

John Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute, says the students had every right to express their political views.

"The First Amendment … says the government cannot restrict your free speech," he tells OneNewsNow. "It can't restrict your right to peacefully assemble. And what's not peaceful about a kid wearing a 'Make America Great Again' shirt or putting it on a flag or whatever?"

Whitehead, John (Rutherford Institute)AZfamily reports the students called their parents, one of whom confronted administrators about the action taken against the students. That parent was apparently escorted from school property after being told the students were asked to leave for "disrespecting the flag" – meaning, presumably, the American flag.

Despite the intimidation from school officials, Whitehead encourages students to stand up for their constitutional rights.

"All the way from the Founding Fathers to Martin Luther King, Jr. and other great people in this country, their message was We're going to get out there and speak it, and if you're going to arrest us we'll go to jail – but we're going to fight for it. And I would like to see a generation of freedom fighters stand up and say We're not taking this stuff anymore."

Whitehead says he's telling parents if they can't change the repressive policies of school officials, they need to home school or enroll their children into private schools.
