Dr. Gary Smalley on stageOne of the leading Christian experts on marriage and the family is being remembered by one of his sons for his authenticity.

Prolific author and speaker Dr. Gary Smalley – founder of the Smalley Institute – passed away March 6 at the age of 75. Smalley authored more than 60 books on relationships and worked closely for many years with Focus on the Family. Smalley and Norma, his wife of 52 years, have three children, all of whom are in ministry.

One of their sons, Greg, now serves as vice president of marriage ministries at Focus on the Family.

"Who he was up on stage was also who he was at home," Greg begins. "The things that he would teach, the principles, the concepts that he would encourage others to do – those were the very things that he really tried with all his heart to live out."

Greg admits his dad "wasn't perfect and he blew it" on occasion – "But I never felt a sense of almost hypocrisy like Yeah, right ... whatever, Dad. You say that stuff and then I experience you at home this way."

And his father had his priorities in order, says Greg: "It was God, it was my mom, and it was us kids, then it was others, it was his ministry."

He says his father's legacy lives on not only in his family but also in the lives of many people who are now doing marriage ministry because of Gary Smalley.

The Smalleys' son Michael is CEO and CFO of the Smalley Institute. Daughter Kari (Smalley) Gibson co-authored several children's books with her father.
