Sylvia Rivera (B&W pic)Not to be outdone by a bust of Margaret Sanger, the photo of a transgender prostitute is now on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

The photo (pictured at left), temporarily hanging in a Civil Rights collection, shows a photo of "Sylvia" Rivera that was taken in 2000 before a "gay pride" parade in New York City. Rivera is pictured in the center.

The National Portrait Gallery is part of the Smithsonian Institute.

In a story about the photo, CNS News explains that Rivera was a prostitute before becoming a homosexual-rights activist.

A description approved by the Smithsonian describes Rivera as a "trans woman sex worker" who worked in "dicey" Times Square area as a teenager.

Rivera died in 2002 from liver cancer.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.In the exhibit, Rivera is recognized in the "Struggle for Justice" collection along with Civil Rights leaders Rosa Parks and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Comparing Rivera to Parks and King is an offense to the Civil Rights leaders and their fight for justice, says attorney and writer Matt Barber.

What the museum has done, he tells OneNewsNow, is to describe a "cross-dressing prostitute sex worker" as a "pioneer for civil rights."

The arts museum in Washington, D.C. has also ignored demands by black leaders to remove a bust of Margaret Sanger, the feminist who championed birth control in the 1930s. She is also in the "Struggle" exhibit.

Sanger also believed in eugenics and believed birth control would prevent minorities, the poor, and the handicapped from reproducing.

Barber says the Smithsonian's presentation of Rivera "establishes once again how far America has fallen from grace, that we are a nation in rebellion against God."
