A Messianic Jewish leader says Minnesota's Twin Cities are a "ticking time bomb" where many citizens live in fear of radical Muslims who have an increasing presence in the area.

Islam crescent and star 620x300Authorities in Minnesota have indicted six men who they say attempted to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State terrorist group. The six sought to reach countries near Syria by flying from the airports in San Diego and New York City, but were stopped and arrested on Sunday.

Jan Markell, founder and director of Minnesota-based Olive Tree Ministries, says a disturbing number of Minneapolis-St. Paul's huge Somali refugee population has become radicalized.

"The problem usually stems from the local mosques, [which] tend to be extremely radical," she explains. "They get a hold of these young men primarily and they radicalize them very easily. Pretty soon they're jumping on a plane and heading over to some Islamic stronghold in the Middle East or Africa."

A criminal complaint unsealed Monday charges the six Minnesota men with conspiring to provide and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Authorities say a handful of Minnesota residents have traveled to Syria to fight with terrorists in the past year.

Markell, Jan (Olive Tree Ministries)Markell finds most troubling the fact that some of those terrorists come back to the Twin Cities - "and we have no idea when they're going to set themselves off as a human bomb somewhere," she adds.

"I'm speaking very candidly and very bluntly for those of us who live in this part of the country," the ministry leader tells OneNewsNow. "And we just feel like we're helpless. We feel like it's a ticking time bomb ready to go off at any minute." She is also fearful that innocent people are going to be caught in the carnage.

Markell is host of the weekend program "Understanding the Times" on American Family Radio.
