A new study out of the UK links smoking high-potency marijuana to an increased risk of suffering psychiatric disorders.

The research is detailed in the prominent medical journal, Lancet Psychiatry. Dr. Kevin Sabet, president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana and director of the Drug Policy Institute at the University of Florida, talks about what scientists discovered.

Sabet

"They found that daily use of marijuana increases the risk of a psychotic episode of having psychosis five times, and risk for a weekend user increases three times,” he says. “So, it still triples the risk if you only use it on the weekend."

But there was not much of an impact with smoking low-potency marijuana, he explains.

"Of course low-potency marijuana is not common at all in the United States,” he adds. “So essentially what that's saying is that the marijuana that most people are smoking here in the U.S. is directly related to psychosis.

"Now of course causation is always difficult. There are other factors, but the researchers did a very good job of trying to eliminate other factors that could have explained this increase."

Sabet says it's time to put the brakes on the movement to legalize marijuana because "the last thing we need is more exacerbated mental-health problems."
