A messianic Jewish leader finds it "stunning" that a major Western publishing company would release an atlas deliberately omitting the nation of Israel from its maps.

Collins Bartholomew is a U.K.-based subsidiary of publishing giant HarperCollins. MRC TV reported recently that Collins Bartholomew made the decision to leave the Israel off of World Atlas maps being sold to English-speaking schools in the Arab world.

Reportedly they omitted Israel because other regional customers objected to its inclusion in the maps, labeling it "unacceptable" – objections that Collins Bartholomew described as "local preferences."

Jan Markell, founder and director of Olive Tree Ministries, spoke with OneNewsNow about the incident.

Markell, Jan (Olive Tree Ministries)"I think it's rather stunning," she says, "and it was a conscious decision – a decision quite frankly that much of the world is making in this new climate of anti-Semitism: and that is 'Erase Israel.'"

Still, Markell is heartened that when word got out about the omission, supporters of Israel were outraged and Harper Collins was forced to apologize.

"So I think there's a positive side [to this] that in this world of rampant anti-Semitism that there's still a remnant who will stick up for Israel and forced Harper Collins to back down," observes the ministry leader.

In its apology, the publisher stated: "This product has now been removed from sale in all territories and all remaining stock will be pulped."

Markell is host of "Understanding the Times" on American Family Radio.
