A book about the boxes

Operation Christmas Child, a program of Samaritan's Purse, had small beginnings. But there seems to be no end to its growth and impact.

A book entitled "Operation Christmas Child: A Story of Simple Gifts," explains how the project began in1993 in Bosnia, where there were thousands of orphans because of the war.

Operation Christmas Child"Operation Christmas Child" co-author Franklin Graham tells OneNewsNow that, after the Bosnia project, his staff and volunteers had a message for him.

"We need to continue this because there's so many kids in the world who live in poverty," Graham recalls. "They live in the slums of the world. They're in desperate condition and nobody is reaching out to them with love."

And Graham wanted them to know of God's love and the true meaning of Christmas.

This year, Operation Christmas Child will be going to 103 countries to distribute about 10 million shoe boxes.

Graham, FranklinGraham suggests that participants include a photo and a note to the child, and a return address, so the child can write back.

He also has a more important suggestion.

"Before you send your box, pray," says Graham. "Pray for the child who's going to get that box because I don't know who gets it but God does, and when we pray we know God will hear the prayer of one righteous person.  But can you imagine 10 million people praying for 10 million children?"

The book tells the story of Operation Christmas Child in depth, behind-the-scenes work by volunteers, and the impact it has made on children throughout the world.
