baptism (word montage)A prominent evangelist and radio talk-show host is warning the Church to get busy doing what the Church is supposed to do.

"We've gone from nine out of ten [people] professing Christianity and practicing Christianity 40 years ago to less than 50% – and the numbers continue to take a dive," notes Dr. Alex McFarland. "So, this is the time to be full-out involved in church for every Christian, not lapsing and declining."

McFarland made that comment in light of Monday's report by the Southern Baptist Convention in its Annual Church Profile. That data indicates SBC member church congregations declined by more than 435,000 in 2020 – 50% more than in the previous year.

The decline is being attributed partly to friction within the denomination and the impact of the pandemic – but McFarland, who co-hosts a weekday call-in program on American Family News, contends other factors played a role as well … factors that impact churches across denominations.

"Some of the people who drift away from church have done so because the church has really not given them anything relevant to live for," he tells One News Now.

And while he acknowledges that many people haven't returned after drifting away (due to COVID, for example), McFarland challenges believers to get on the phone and knock on doors to invite them back.

"This is no time to try and be woke or palatable to a pagan culture," he urges. "This is a time to proclaim the Word of God – and the Holy Spirit of the Lord will use that to get people's attention."

The Southern Baptist Convention meets June 15-16 in Nashville for its annual gathering. The problems the denomination is experiencing are likely to spark lively conversations.
