eucharist (Catholic communion)A Catholic pro-life leader is setting the record straight on abortion – and applauding an archbishop for taking a stand that challenges pro-abortion politicians who claim the Catholic faith.

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone is strongly condemning abortion and telling Catholics who are out of line on the issue not to receive communion. In a pastoral letter released on Saturday, the archbishop states:

"If you find that you are unwilling or unable to abandon your advocacy for abortion, you should not come forward to receive Holy Communion."

The letter doesn't mention any politicians by name – but the two highest-profile, pro-abortion Catholic politicians right now are President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who represents the San Francisco district.

Judie Brown of American Life League first met Cordileone many years ago. She tells One News Now that he has been a strong defender of preborn babies since she's known him.

"And the fact that he's issued this letter in defense of the eucharist and calling out pro-abortion Catholic politicians is a very strong sign that at least some of the bishops in America are sick and tired of Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and others arguing that it's perfectly okay to be in favor of killing babies and still receive the Body of Christ in holy communion," says Brown.

In his letter, Cordileone also offers this plea:

"[P]lease stop pretending that advocating for or practicing a grave moral evil – one that snuffs out an innocent human life, one that denies a fundamental human right – is somehow compatible with the Catholic faith."

Not all bishops agree that pro-abortion politicians should deny themselves communion if they support abortion. Cordileone cites church doctrine and the Bible to support his view – and Brown compliments the archbishop for arguing from a basis of biblical truth.

"Even though the secular media says it means nothing, he continues to insist on this message because it is the truth. It is the only message that will eventually resonate with Catholics," she maintains. "He's a good shepherd, and I really admire him for what he's done."

Biden, Pelosi, and many other politicians who claim the Catholic faith at the same time are pushing Congress to enact legislation that dramatically expands abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, and to reject the Helms Amendment which blocks use of federal funds to pay for them.
