Survey: 'Treason' among evangelicals on God's design for sexuality

transgenderism (combo image)Genesis 1:27 teaches that God created humans "male and female" – yet on a recent survey, more than one in five evangelical Christians (22%) agreed with the statement: "Gender identity is a matter of choice."

Ligonier Ministries partnered with LifeWay Research to conduct its biennial nationwide State of Theology survey of more than 3,000 adults in the U.S. – including 630 professing evangelicals – and found that when it comes to evangelizing Americans on human sexuality, the country's "theological temperature" reflects the spiritual battle between God's Word and the LGBTQ agenda.

With secular humanism being at the root of the teachings behind the LGBTQ agenda, more and more Americans are embracing the concept that man determines his own truth (and gender) above God's absolute truth. This belief even comes into play with a significant proportion of evangelical Christians today, according to the biennial study.

"In 2020, 73% of U.S. evangelicals reject the arguments of 'gender fluidity,' while 22% believe that 'gender identity is a matter of choice," researchers from Ligonier and LifeWay reveal in a press release describing the results of their survey conducted in March.

"As the broader culture in the United States increasingly embraces relativistic views of human identity, data from the survey exposes a need for Christians to receive clear teaching from the Bible on the image of God, the creation ordinance of marriage, and the purposeful distinction between male and female gender."

Reformation Bible College president Dr. Stephen Nichols – who also serves as chief academic officer with Ligonier Ministries – recognizes the trend of politically correct teachings pervading society on the topic of human sexuality.

"Not only does this threaten an entire generation with lifelong trauma, but – more ultimately – this message is one of treason against the supreme authority of God."

He issues a warning – and a wakeup call – to believers who are susceptible to being deceived by man's doctrines, to their own detriment.

"Christians must listen and submit to God's steadfast Word in all that it teaches, but the 2020 State of Theology survey suggests that many American evangelicals are instead listening to the changing voice of culture," Nichols states. "We hope this survey will help serve the Church of Jesus Christ in making disciples who know, love and contend for the truth – especially in a culture that is confused about what truth even is."

The 600-plus evangelicals surveyed strongly agreed with each of the four statements:

  • "The Bible is the highest authority for what I believe."
  • "It is very important for me personally to encourage non-Christians to trust Jesus Christ as their Savior."
  • "Jesus Christ's death on the cross is the only sacrifice that could remove the penalty of my sin."
  • "Only those who trust in Jesus Christ alone as their Savior receive God's free gift of eternal salvation."

Yet, approximately 140 of those surveyed still appear to reject the Bible's teaching that their gender as male or female is given by God, their Creator.
