AWANA with kidsAn international ministry that helps children study and memorize Bible verses is embarking on a new initiative: help Hispanic churches do the same.

Citing new research estimating more than 35 percent of Hispanics in America consider themselves "born again" Evangelicals, Awana has announced a new vision for the next five years.

Mike Handler, vice president of global brand at Awana, says the goal is to be active in 2,500 Hispanic churches in the U.S. by 2023.

"This would be adding to the 54,000 current programs that we run worldwide in local churches," he tells OneNewsNow.

Awana, founded in 1950, provides churches with age-appropriate scripture memorization curriculum. It may be best known for the vests worn by younger children, showing off their achievements, and for age groups such as "Cubbies," "Sparks," and "Truth and Training."

On its website, Awana says more than 330,000 trained Awana leaders are discipling more than four million children worldwide. The number of Awana clubs in the U.S. is over 9,700.

Handler tells OneNewsNow Awana is launching the U.S. Latino Child Discipleship Network, and the ministry is seeking a national ministry director.

"Who will shepherd this community," he says of the future hire. "Who will identify, develop and form partnerships with networks and denominations to share this vision, and to help equip the local church here in the U.S to reach more children and youth for Christ."
