God is a good, good...mother? Really?

Book of Common Prayer (Episcopal)The Episcopal Church's 79th General Convention is under way in Austin, Texas, where the liberal denomination is taking steps to portray God in gender-neutral terms in its Book of Common Prayer.

Over the weekend, the House of Deputies voted for a plan to revise the book and now the House of Bishops must do the same.

Jeff Walton, who directs the Anglican program for the Institute on Religion & Democracy, says it appears the denomination wants to make it clear it stands for equality in the current "Me Too" culture.

But calling God "Father," he says, does not undermine that equality.

Walton, Jeff (IRD)"Jesus refers to his 'Father in Heaven.' He doesn't use the term Mother," says Walton. "Jesus doesn't use the term parent. He uses the term Father and that is therefore what we should also do."

A second issue for the General Convention is expanding same-gender marriage within the already-liberal denomination, which consecrated Gene Robinson as the first openly homosexual bishop in 2003.

There is now an effort to add same-gender marriage rites to the Book of Common Prayer.

Walton says the church "should be rooted in something deeper than ourselves and deeper than this own individual moment and this own time."
