The primary organization calling for $15 an hour at Walmart is known as "OUR Walmart." Demonstrations have been happening all week in New York, although OUR Walmart says in a press release it is planning things in all 50 states leading up to Black Friday (November 27). Some demonstrators say they are even "fasting for 15."

Ashley Pratte, advisor to Worker Center Watch, describes the effort as another page out of the organizers' playbook.

Pratte

"In 2012, they actually started ... to realize that they had failed to organize Walmart workers and employees, which is the whole reason behind all of these shenanigans and stunts that they pull," she tells OneNewsNow.

"This is all a ploy to unionize Walmart – and their hypocrisy is already apparent through all of these tactics that they are using. A lot of the people you see outside of these protests are, in fact, paid to be there; they're not actual Walmart employees."

Pratte warns that unions won't stop at $15 an hour for Walmart employees.

Regardless, Walmart announced earlier this year it was investing $1 billion to pay 500,000 full-time and part-time associates at least $9 an hour. According to CNN, that amounts to more than one-third of Walmart's work force. The retailer says it plans to increase the pay of those employees to at least $10 an hour in February.
