Christian groups treated differently

A lawsuit has been filed against a Utah college that's blatantly banning the free-speech rights of a campus Christian group.

Barham, Travis (ADF)The Alliance Defending Freedom contends Snow College treats religious groups much differently than it does secular campus groups. For example, Travis Barham of ADF reports that the school prohibited the Solid Rock Christian Club's storefront display as a part of homecoming events.

"They put together a display that incorporated both the homecoming theme and their Christian message, put that up in the window, and they hadn't even finished outlining the cross in their display before the student affairs staff was all upset and started chastising them right out there on the public sidewalk," Barham reports.

Moreover, secular groups have access to student fees and the free use of facilities, while religious groups do not.

The attorney explains that groups treated that way "don't get to reserve space on campus for free, you have to pay in order to advertise events, at least you have to pay for your own materials, and you don't get any access to student fees. This is the sort of thing that has been [found by courts to be] unconstitutional."

ADF has filed a lawsuit against the college but has elected to delay serving the legal papers in order to give college officials a chance to change their anti-religious policies and avoid the suit.
