An online organization of moms says Macy's can't be trusted after a segment in this year's "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade."
The incident in question was a musical presentation called "Raise You Up" about 30 minutes into the two-hour NBC broadcast – an incident that OneMillionMoms.com describes as "an unpleasant surprise ... for viewers."
"[It] included drag queens, transvestites, transgenders – and the cross-dressing was completely inappropriate with millions of children watching and present at this particular family-friendly event," says Monica Cole, director of OneMillionMoms. The group also describes the performance as "sexually charged and quite offensive."
Approximately 3.5 million people witnessed the parade in person and upwards of 50 million watched the broadcast.
Besides the characters and costumes from the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, OneMillionMoms takes exception to lyrics such as "let pride be your guide" and "just be who you wanna be" – all of which resulted in a performance "not suitable for families," the group states on its website.
According to the retailer's parade policy, participants are invited "exclusively on their ability to provide appropriate family entertainment suitable to the occasion."
Cole says her activist group has contacted its supporters and is "urging them to email Macy's, letting them know we no longer trust Macy's."
This is the first year that OneMillionMoms.com was aware of such an event at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
OneMillionMoms offers more details about the performance on its website.
