A story of football, faith and fatherhood

Charlie Butts   (OneNewsNow.com) Thursday, September 06, 2012

Despite having been told his senior year of college that an injury would prevent him from playing again, Jim Kelly's football career continued. In 2002, he was even inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now, Kelly has written a book called The Playbook for Dads.

Kelly, JimKelly grew up in a family that taught him that would not always go his way. But he also learned to never give up on his goals. He implemented that philosophy in his family life, and after losing his son, he became a dedicated Christian.

"I didn't see it through the eyes of the Lord," Kelly recalls. "I didn't really urge my daughters, even though my wife came to the Lord many years before I did. It took me some time to really understand what it was all about and really take grasp of it, knowing that I would never get an opportunity to see my son again if I didn't change my ways or change the feelings I had in my heart."

After his son died, Kelly continued to evolve as a Christian father.

"I knew that when Daddy walked through that front door, I wanted my two daughters to look at me with respect," he says. "I didn't want them looking at daddy as different from some of the others they love. And then, of course, the ultimate was treating my wife the way she should be treated."

Kelly admits that it was not easy at the beginning, but God's perfect timing brought him from the point of football hall of famer to family hall of famer through Christ. His book is titled The Playbook for Dads.
