An anti-communist activist isn't surprised that the Chinese are resisting international efforts to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear program.
During a recent meeting with Iran's first vice president, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said Beijing will "maintain high-level exchanges with Iran." He says China plans to strengthen cooperation with Tehran, indicating that China will not go along with strict sanctions aimed at Iran's disputed nuclear program. While offering no specifics, China's official Xinhua News Agency reports Wen saying China is committed to a peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue. D.J. McGuire, president of the China e-Lobby, admits he is not surprised Beijing and Tehran are so friendly to each other. "[But] what surprises me is that people are surprised by this after all these years," regards McGuire. "That's what surprises me -- that people do not see the facts right in front of their face and recognize it. But sadly they still don't." China and Russia both hold permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, and could veto any resolution calling for tougher sanctions on the Iranians.
