U.S. Border Patrol agents say several groups of illegal aliens from China have been arrested in southern Arizona in recent days. The Border Patrol says it's part of a trend that has seen increasing numbers of Chinese trying to sneak into the U.S. from Mexico.
A Border Patrol spokesman says that smugglers are taking advantage of an increase in Chinese tourism in South and Central America and enticing Chinese to be smuggled into the United States. Authorities cite an almost ten-fold spike in the number of Chinese nationals caught in the Arizona desert, the busiest smuggling corridor on the U.S.-Mexican border. While the numbers are still tiny in comparison to the number of Mexican citizens caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally, Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform says he is not surprised that illegal aliens from countries like China are trying to sneak into the U.S. "The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for securing 8,607 miles worth of land and sea borders -- and they have a grand total of 894 [miles] under what they call 'effective control,' whatever that means," he states. "So it is not surprising that people in China, people all over the world -- and potentially people who are coming here to commit acts of terror -- understand that our borders are not secure. And they will take advantage of it." Mehlman contends those unsecured U.S. borders are attracting illegal aliens from all over the world.
