A national defense analyst and Pentagon advisor is concerned about the recent display of Chinese military might paraded through Beijing to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the communist takeover in China.
It was reminiscent of the May Day parades in the former Soviet Union. On October 1, the Chinese spared no expense putting on a massive display of their latest military equipment through the heart of their capital. Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (USA-Ret.) says China wants the world to know that it has a military to be reckoned with -- and it showed off that firepower during the celebration. "They had hundreds of modern battle tanks -- the T-91s -- which they're trying to sell all over the world. They had over a hundred ballistic missiles, some of which are very sophisticated -- as good as ours," he notes. "They had on display in the air, essentially AWACS [airborne warning and control systems], and they had the J-10, which is a fairly sophisticated fighter," Maginnis says, adding that the regime has invested in nuclear submarines and an aircraft carrier as well. "They're doing all sorts of things," he concludes. According to Maginnis, the anniversary display demonstrated the communist nation wants to be recognized not just as a regional power, but as a growing global superpower that is able to project its influence anywhere in the world.
