A Pentagon advisor and senior military strategist believes the Israelis are growing weary of the game of Western procrastination and are ready to strike if the Western powers, plus Russia and China, don't stop Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
As previously reported on OneNewsNow, President Barack Obama announced last week that he is shifting a planned U.S. missile defense program away from Eastern Europe to other locations. The president said Iran's medium- and short-range missiles are a greater threat than are long-range missiles. Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (USA-Ret.) says he believes Obama's move is really a quid pro quo to Moscow in order to get Russian cooperation for tougher sanctions against Iran at the upcoming United Nations disarmament summit. The former troop commander says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not going to wait forever for the major powers to stop Iran. "Netanyahu met with Obama early in May and he essentially said, 'We need a solution, and there's got to be a deadline.' The Obama administration is forced to answer Netanyahu's question, 'When are you going to do something about Iran?'" Maginnis suggests. According to the military strategist, Obama convinced the Israeli leader to hold off until the meetings later this month, when the world powers will try to come up with a solution. If not, he believes Israel is ready to strike. "The Israeli press suggests that it's by December. That's always hard to know, the calculations that every nation makes. They have to have some assistance from us for air corridors, some intelligence, and maybe even some equipment to really ensure that they can be effective. So it could be months," Maginnis contends. "They have very little confidence at this point in Obama." Maginnis says much of that cooperation will be behind the scenes, with even some Sunni nations not minding Shiite Iran getting a black eye.
