Indiana senator shifts left to support Hamilton

Sen. Richard LugarAn Indiana pro-family organization is calling its Republican Senator Richard Lugar to task for his support of David Hamilton for a seat on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.

A number of conservative organizations have voiced their concerns about the nomination of Hamilton, who in 2005 ruled that the Indiana House of Representatives could not open sessions with prayers that mentioned Jesus Christ or used the term "savior" or anything similar. But as Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions notes, Hamilton was willing to allow a Muslim cleric to offer invocations mentioning Allah.

The Indiana Family Institute (IFI) shares the concerns about Hamilton, a former vice-president of the Indiana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and a fund raiser for the controversial group ACORN.

Ryan McCann (Indiana Family Inst)Ryan McCann, a spokesman for IFI, says the organization is not happy that Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar has supported Hamilton's nomination.

"Judge Hamilton has a record of judicial activism here in the state of Indiana. He is not a conservative for sure, and he's a judicial activist for the left, and so we have opposed him from day one," McCann states. "It's a shame that Senator Lugar would support someone like Judge Hamilton."

McCann says unfortunately, this is not the first time the Republican Senator has shifted to the left.

"You look at the Defense Appropriations Bill and it had the federal hate crimes law that would basically give folks that have an alternative sexual lifestyle greater protection in the law than the average American citizen," the spokesman recalls. "So that was disturbing, and Senator Lugar supported that."

McCann says Senator Lugar's office has not been responsive to his organization's concerns on a number of issues.
