Election results have deeper meaning

A conservative activist and former presidential candidate says Tuesday night's election results show that many of last year's Barack Obama supporters have experienced "buyer's remorse."

Despite the fact that President Obama campaigned hard for Democrat gubernatorial candidates in both Virginia and New Jersey, the GOP emerged victorious as Bob McDonnell and Chris Christie will be taking the reigns of power in their respective state capitols.

Gary Bauer 1Gary Bauer, chairman of American Values, says Obama's coattails were cut off.

"One year ago, the president swept into office in a very impressive victory. On Inauguration Day in January, his approval rating was 78 percent," reports Bauer. "Today his approval rating is down [to] just a little above 50 percent. Almost every one of his policies are not getting majority support anymore."

Bauer says Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman's near-miss in New York's 23rd Congressional district sent a message to both parties.

Blue Dog Democrats emblem"There's no question about it. There were strong messages in the voting. I think ironically, on the Democratic side, the splits in that party continue to get very large, even though the media ignores them," he notes. "You've got a number of Blue Dogs in the House and Senate who are now going to be less likely to vote for Obama's big government agenda."

But considering this insight, Bauer says it is still too early to tell whether the 2009 results will indicate what could happen next year.
