Voters in Kalamazoo, Michigan, have approved a domestic partnership ordinance.
When the Kalamazoo City Commission approved the ordinance initially, a petition drive forced the issue on the ballot. Then the Commission revoked the ordinance but later passed it again, forcing another petition drive to put it back on the ballot. On Tuesday, voters approved Ordinance 1856 by a wide margin. Gary Glenn heads the American Family Association of Michigan. "We thought we were going to do better than we did," he admits. "We had identified enough voters to actually win, but we were unable to get them actually to go vote, which is a disappointment." According to Glenn, money played a large role in the ordinance's passage. "As of October 20, homosexual activists had raised $350,000 for a ballot campaign in a city of about 75,000 people -- and our side of the issue had raised about $35,000." He explains supporters of the ordinance were bankrolled by an "in-house homosexual activist billionaire" who lives in Kalamazoo. "So given that we were outspent at least 10-to-1, I suppose we can take some encouragement from the fact that we got about 40 percent of the vote," states the pro-family activist. Glenn shares that he and others who opposed the ordinance pushed ahead knowing it would be a rough battle. "Our attitude is that from the day we achieved getting this on the ballot, we had already won," he says, "because after the Kalamazoo City Commission voted for this, had we not gathered enough signatures to force a public vote on it, homosexual activists would have gotten this victory for free." Glenn says his organization will continue to challenge any pro-homosexual ordinances passed in other cities in the state.
