Baptist leader: Public option a dead end

A Southern Baptist leader is encouraging people to speak out against any public option in a healthcare bill.

Richard LandDr. Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) for the Southern Baptist Convention, says a public option in a government-run healthcare plan would be a disaster. "We're hearing the government has fouled up the delivery of the swine flu vaccine," he says. "This is what happens when you have government-run healthcare. They can't run anything."

Land tells about a similar program that was attempted in his home state, Tennessee. "We had an experience in Tennessee with TennCare [that was] an attempt to [have a] public option," remembers Land. "What happens is, when you have [a] public option, employers dump their employees into the public option....We had 35 percent of the people in Tennessee on TennCare, and it was bankrupting the state."

The ERLC president believes government-run healthcare will pave the way for a socialized medical system for the United States.
