An author and political analyst believes there's a good chance that disaffection with the Republican nominee in a special congressional election in New York state could result in a victory by a conservative third-party candidate.
The New York Times has described the special election in New York's 23rd Congressional district as a referendum on the Republican Party's future. Three candidates are vying for the seat left vacant by Republican John McHugh who resigned in September to become Secretary of the Army. The media is paying little attention to Democrat Bill Owens while the focus is on the battle between the Republican nominee Diedre "DeDe" Scozzafava and Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. Craig Shirley recently published Rendezvous with Destiny: Ronald Reagan and the Campaign That Changed America. He agrees with the assessment of many others that Scozzafava is a Republican in name only. "She's pro-federal funding of abortion, she's pro-abortion, she's pro-gay rights, she's pro-stimulus package, [and] she's pro-Obama," Shirley lists. "She is only a Republican in name only, and she's not a conservative on anything. So the Conservative Party of New York, rightly upset over [the GOP] picking an ultra-liberal woman, is fielding their own candidate, Doug Hoffman, who very well might win in the general election. " Shirley believes that the battle in New York's 23rd District is a perfect microcosm of the fight in the Republican Party today. Recent polls have shown Scozzafava fading and Hoffman surging.
