The communist Chinese government is taking a hard line against human-rights attorneys who have challenged the government's abuse of Chinese citizens.
The Beijing government has cancelled or refused to renew the licenses of at least 21 human rights attorneys. Many of those attorneys have assisted the China Aid Association in legal defense efforts for religious freedom cases. Katherine Cason with CAA says the situation is grave. "One Christian attorney, Gao Zhisheng, has been missing since February," she laments. "[He was] actually kidnapped by government authorities and he's being held hostage because of his work speaking out for Christians and others who are persecuted for their beliefs. "These [others] have been doing the same thing and they're not missing," notes Cason, "but the government is shutting them down in another way by refusing to renew their licenses or revoking them." So far, the Chinese government has refused to release information regarding the whereabouts or condition of Gao Zhisheng.
