A Southern Baptist evangelist who spends a lot of time ministering in Russia says the former Soviet Union is ripe for revival.
Michael Gott spends about half of his time in the United States conducting revivals and crusades, and the other half overseas, generally emphasizing on Russia. Gott reports that there has been an intense Russian interest in the gospel since the fall of communism. "There is a kind of spiritual awakening going on there, and we can be a part of it -- but there has to be a commitment to world evangelism on our part, and we have to have the willingness to do that," Gott urges. "So we try to encourage Christians from different churches to go with us on teams." These teams take part in a number of activities which are all designed to show the love of Christ to people. Gott encourages Christians in America to support international evangelism, both prayerfully and financially. "Of every dollar given to the American church, American Christians end up somehow spending 95 cents out of every dollar on ourselves, and our facilities, and our staff, and our programs -- so that only five cents out of every dollar is really committed to evangelism. Four cents we are spending on trying to evangelize people who have already heard the gospel." Gott concludes that "only one cent out of every dollar given is designated for people who have never heard the message of Jesus Christ." Gott says the door is open for evangelists and Christian workers in Russia for the time being. However, he says that is subject to change as some in the government are trying to return the nation back to communism.
