Reports continue to come in regarding the damage and devastation left in the wake of record floods in southern India.
Recently, floods swept through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Immediately, missionaries with Gospel for Asia went to work, helping those hardest hit. According to Daniel Yohannan, vice president of GFA, the damage is overwhelming. "Because of the reservoirs not [being] able to hold the water, they haven't seen this much water in a hundred years; they opened the reservoirs and it just flooded everything," he explains. "Of course, the rains and the rivers are overflowing, so ten-million people have been displaced, two-million homes have been destroyed," Yohannon continues. "Right now, they estimate over 400 villages have been completely destroyed." Yohannan says India's poor infrastructure means survivors are often left to fend for themselves. But GFA missionaries, he adds, are helping provide basic necessities, along with a strong Christian witness.
